About Southern Railway
All Railway organizations were merged in 1944 and control by India Government. After three years, when India become independence , the stage was set for the coordination of various Railways into littler zones. In 1948, promptly after freedom, there were upwards of 42 distinctive railroad frameworks – an assortment of railroad organizations, differing in size and norms.
The Minister for Railways, Shri N Gopalaswamy Ayyangar – was the vital designer of the regrouping of Indian Railways. In 1950, the Central Advisory Committee for Railways affirmed the arrangement for Indian Railways into six Zonal frameworks, to be specific, the Northern, the North-Eastern, the Southern, the Central, the Eastern and the Western.
The Southern Railway zone (9,654 course km) was the main zone to be formed. Created on 1951 by the merger of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway and the Mysore State Railway, the financial and topographical components of this zone encouraged an early coordinated system. This amalgamation was a noteworthy stride towards streamlining and arranging the working example of the Railway framework.
Shri K R Ramanujam was named the primary General Manager of the recently shaped Southern Railway.
The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the 16 zones of Indian Railways. It is the soonest of the 16 zones of the Indian Railways made in free India.
Southern Railway has its base camp in Chennai and has the accompanying six divisions:

These are the busiest and most income producing stations. Ernakulam Town, Erode Junction, Tirunelveli Junction, Aluva, Tiruchirappalli Junction, Shoranur Junction, Salem Junction, Kollam Junction, Palakkad Junction, Katpadi Junction, Mangaluru Junction and Kayamkulam Junction are a portion of the other significant stations. A large number of the real stations are being moved up to world-class guidelines.
